Relieving Senior Hunger

Food insecurity is a serious issue that affects 1 in 10 people throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties. Many of these individuals are older adults and senior citizens who face problems such as fixed-income financial constraints, physical limitations, and a variety of other challenges that make it difficult to access the nutritious food they need.

Food insecurity is a pressing issue affecting 1 in 10 individuals in Chicago. Among those impacted, a significant portion comprises older adults and senior citizens. These individuals grapple with fixed-income constraints, physical limitations, and various challenges that hinder their ability to access the nutritious food they require. Consequently, they face an elevated risk of chronic diseases, diminished physical and mental well-being, and a reduced quality of life.

Sanad Food Pantry recognizes the urgency of addressing food insecurity among older adults, leading to the establishment of the Elder Share program. This specialized initiative is designed to cater to adults aged 60 and above, ensuring they have access to nutritious food through diverse delivery methods. These include home delivery, curbside pickup, community pantry visits, and choice model distributions in retirement homes. For those unable to directly participate due to geographical constraints, scheduling conflicts, or other reasons, the Elder Share program offers resources and support to help them access alternative food assistance and community resources through our partner agencies.

A key advantage of the Elder Share program is its capacity to offer seniors a range of healthy food options, including fresh produce, dairy, meat, and essential items. This commitment ensures that older adults consistently have access to nutritious food, contributing to their overall health and well-being. Moreover, the program prioritizes accessibility and convenience, addressing mobility challenges commonly faced by seniors.

In 2022, the Elder Share program achieved a remarkable milestone, delivering over 5,800 meals to those in need. This success was made possible through the dedicated efforts of our remarkable volunteers, who handled over 90% of the deliveries. Without their unwavering commitment, programs like Elder Share would not be feasible.

The program’s impact extends beyond food distribution, emphasizing community engagement and outreach. Collaboration with local community organizations and volunteer groups enables the provision of education and support to older adults grappling with food insecurity.

As food insecurity remains a growing concern for older adults and senior citizens in our communities, the Elder Share program will continue its mission to aid older adults facing food insecurity. It will provide them with access to nutritious food, resources, and support. Sanad Food Pantry remains committed to ensuring that all older adults have the means to access nourishing food for a healthy and fulfilling life.

“Sanad Food Pantry has made a significant difference in my life. Thanks to their support, I’ve been able to continue doing the things I love, such as cooking and preserving food. It brings me joy and keeps me engaged, even though my vision is impaired.”
